Microneedling vs Microdermabrasion

Microneedling vs Microdermabrasion

Your skin is the barrier between the outside and the rest of your body. For this reason, it’s important to keep it healthy and looking its best. Factors like the sun and aging can take a huge toll on your skin, resulting in wrinkles and other conditions that leave you wishing for a more youthful look. Luckily, treatments like microneedling or microdermabrasion can help.

At Marvelous Clinic and Medspa, our team of aesthetic specialists helps you achieve healthier and younger looking skin through a variety of therapies and treatments. Heading up our team is Dr. Mohamed Mansour, who is an expert in medspa treatments like microneedling and microdermabrasion.

When do you need microneedling or microdermabrasion?

We all wish that we could have youthful skin all through our lives. Unfortunately, there are a lot of factors that play against your skin through the years.

Age is one of the biggest factors that affects the youthful glow and tightness of your skin. This is because as you get older, your body’s production of the proteins elastin and collagen slow down. The result is thinner, less elastic skin that’s prone to damage.

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot you can do about the reduction in those vital proteins, as it’s a normal part of aging. However, if you have any of the following problems, cosmetic procedures like microneedling and microdermabrasion can help.

Although both procedures are able to help make wrinkles and sun damage less noticeable, microneedling has the ability to help with a few other conditions as well. But how do you know which one of these treatments is right for you and your skin?

How do the two procedures differ?

Microneedling and microdermabrasion are both treatments that Dr. Mansour uses to treat a number of different skin conditions. However, although these treatments can be used for some of the same conditions, the procedures for both differ greatly.

Microdermabrasion is a treatment that uses a rough surface to basically sand away the top layer of your skin. Dr. Mansour performs this procedure on your body and face to exfoliate and remove damaged tissue and cells at the surface of your skin.

The machine that’s used often has a diamond tip with suction attached to it to get rid of the skin debris as the machine works. The procedure is relatively painless, and you can see the results almost immediately. Your skin feels smoother and has an even glow after microdermabrasion.

Microneedling, on the other hand, is a very different procedure that uses a tool known as a dermal roller to poke hundreds of tiny holes in the surface of your skin. Dr. Mansour uses several very fine needles on the dermal roller to penetrate your skin.

The needles used in microneedling encourage skin repair by triggering your body to produce more collagen and elastin. These proteins are essential to help thicken and plump your skin, while healing damage too.

Microneedling is slightly more painful than microdermabrasion, so Dr. Mansour may use a numbing cream on the area being treated before he begins. You won’t see the results as quickly with microneedling either; it takes weeks to months for the collagen and elastin to work to the point of seeing results.

Both procedures are safe, and both have side effects that can happen due to the mild invasiveness of each. However, the only way to know which one is better for you is to see Dr. Mansour so he can evaluate your skin and form a treatment plan.
